June Newsletter

It has been a busy couple of month so far at Art Bug with new sessions starting in East Oxford’s wonderful new bookshop, Caper and pop up sessions at the Jericho Street Fair.

This term we have been making artworks out of everything we normally throw away. Inspired by Yuval Zimmer’s stunning picture book, The Wild, we have made masks out of food containers in Marston and forest creatures on Magdalane Road.

It was great to be a part of The Jericho Street Fair on Saturday 8th June. A wonderful atmosphere and we were blessed with glorious sunshine all day. Art Bug was there to promote our Summer Camp running at the Community Centre, Jericho between Monday 5th - Wednesday 7th August. (Please get in touch at catrionadooley74@gmail.com for further details).

I am also very excited to say that we have started running classes for adults at Caper on The Magdalene Road. Part bookclub, part drawing club in these sessions we will be looking at books that involve art related subjects and making drawings inspired by the artworks they portray.

This month we were read Thunderbolt by Laura Cumming. There was much lively discussion about Dutch Art followed by a drawing session in which we made images of The Goldfinch by Carel Fabritius. Some very lovely bird drawings came out of this session and I look forward to seeing what comes out of our July session in which we will be discussing All the Beauty in the World by Patrick Bringley.

With the summer holidays approaching fast, we will be offering two Summer Camps. One at St Nicholas Church Hall in Marston and one in The Community Centre Jericho. Notification of dates will be going out soon, so look out for messages about this.

Thanks all of you have joined our sessions over the past months. There has been so much creativity, fun and interesting discussion about art. I look forward to more creative adventures in the months to come!

Thank you to all the amazing students who have been a part of Art Bug Club this year. It has been fantastic year of creativity and fun and I am so grateful to everyone who has taken part to make it so enjoyable. Highlights of the year include the Wild shadow puppets we made, reflecting on our need to recycle our household waste and taking care of the planet.

Another standout project was A Lion in Paris with some very beautiful lion collages and sculptures being created.

I am very much looking forward to the beginning of the new school year in September and the creative endeavours to come!

At Art Bug our intention is to nurture the child’s natural inclination to look at things closely. We encourage students to focus upon the details of things; the veins of a leaf, the pattern on a tea cup. We look and then we draw or paint what we see. In so doing, we hope that children will retain their sense of awe and wonder about the world around them and learn how to appreciate what they can achieve with a bit of guidance.

We have also started sessions for adults at Caper Bookshop on Magdalene Road which have been well received. The format is simple, we pick a book which focuses on a particular genre of art or an artist, we discuss the book and then have a go at making a guided drawing of an image discussed in the text. We do all of this over a glass of wine and cake so look out for our next event on Wednesday 6th November when we will be looking at Man with a Blue Scarf by Martin Gayford. Tickets can be purchased on the door or on the Caper website www.caper.fun.

We have got some exciting events coming up for the October half term. On 28th and 29th October, we will be running two sessions at Caper bookshop both of which will take inspiration from Maurice Sendak’s classic picture book, In the Night Kitchen. Please see details about this event on the Caper website www.caper.fun.

On 30th Oct, 31st Oct and 1st November we will be running sessions at St. Nicholas Church Hall, Old Marston OX3 0PR. The sessions will run from 2pm-4pm and will all be based around the theme of Studio Ghibli films. Please get in touch with Catriona at catrionadooly74@gmail.com for booking and details.
